Peace before the rush

I woke up to the sounds of the puppy whining...and the wind chimes ringing in the gentle wind. Took her ito the restroom with me, hoping that would be enough for her. No. As soon as she went back into her crate, she made it known she had other plans. At 4 a.m.

So out we went, quietly sneaking down the hallway so as to not awaken anyone else. I tried not to make any noise opening the door, but the screen door has that proverbial squeeeek...

So dark...so quiet. As I put the puppy down on the porch, I thought "the winds have finally died down." and just about that time I heard it. The soft sound of a gentle rain. Living on a busy street, that's not a sound I'm real familiar with, at least at home. It sounded so peaceful...the air smelled so clean and fresh.

The pup ran spun around in a circle a few times, trying to figure out what was going on, looking for a place to hold still for a few seconds. Finally she finished and ran, ears flopping, back to the porch and the safety and warmth of my arms. Drying her with a shirt I'd grabbed, I glanced up to the sky and saw a bright star, only one, peeking through the rain clouds. It was serene.

We stood for a couple of minutes, just listening...and inhaling the smell of the wet. Felt a shiver from the puppy...time to go in. Now, as I type this, the traffic is starting...the peace is gone. And the puppy is snoring. I should be.
